It wasn't enough to see Rigobert Song's side through to the knockout stages of the tournament after they lost to Brazil in their final group game.

The news and features of the World Cup in 2022.

Brazil dominated much of the match, but Aboubakar's 90th-minute winner ensured that they finished on a winning note. He celebrated by taking his shirt off and was subsequently sent off by the referee, who also gave him a second yellow card for his celebration.

With qualification already secured, Brazil manager Tite made nine changes to his side ahead of the match, and while they head through as winners of Group G, this was a shock result and not the preparation they wanted ahead of their round of 16 match against South.

Player ratings, best and worst performers, highlights and notable moments, post match quotes, and key statistics are included in the jump.

Rapid reaction

1. Cameroon give this World Cup another shock

The manager of the Brazil side was given a selection dilemma as a result of the many changes made to the team. Some people let it go by while a couple took it.

Brazil's expectations remain the same, even though they have changed. This was added to the list of shocks.

Tite reinforced the faith he has in the entire squad to get the job done by making a lot of changes. Weverson is the third choice keeper. The selection gamble didn't work out in the long run.

Gabriel Martinelli was brought in to play for Brazil and he was the best player on the field as he caused a lot of headaches for the opposing team. Twice he was able to slip past his marker to get shots on goal, but it was only the astute positioning of the goalie that kept them out.

Those who didn't make the most of their chance were the ones who failed. Gabriel Jesus did well in link-up play, even though he never really got a chance. Antony showed flashes of brilliance in the opening stages but was eventually marked out of the game by the Seattle Sounders. Rodrygo was one of the more promising players off the bench in Brazil's win over Switzerland, but he was roughed up by the defense and didn't trouble the goal.

Their profligacy ended up costing them and it was a defensive lapse that allowed Aboubakar to head home. With South Korea lying in wait and the injured personnel watching from the stands, Tite will have cause for concern.

The focus for Brazil was on those in the stands or unused on the bench. The Brazil fans who packed Lusail Stadium gave huge cheers to the sight of the injured player, as he was present in the stadium. Alex Telles was hurt in the early stages of the second half and Brazil will be hoping that Alex Sandro is able to play. The squad's reserves in defence were tested here with Marquinhos being a makeshift left-back.

The majority didn't want to force their way into the starting lineup.

2. Cameroon impress despite group stage exit

If they were to progress to the knockout rounds, they would need a victory against Brazil and some other results. The fact that they were still in with a shout of making the round of 16 despite starting the tournament with a poor performance was a credit to them.

They were able to create history against Brazil because of their heroics against Serbia. The people were patient. They had their back against the wall for most of the match. Bryan Mbeumo's head on the stroke of half-time needed a world-class save from Ederson to keep it out.

They repelled everything Brazil threw at them in the second half. The players and manager have been praised for their defensive organisation. Even though they were without their two first-choice centre-backs for the game, they were still able to keep out Brazil. In the absence of Onana, Epassy put in a great performance. The waves of attack were kept out by him. It all gave him a chance to make a name for himself.

3. Dani Alves makes Brazilian men's World Cup history

As he became the oldest men's player to represent Brazil in a World Cup, the ageless Dani Alves solidified his place in Brazilian football history. The previous record was held by another right-back at the 1966 World Cup, who was 37 at the time.

There were questions about the inclusion of Alves in the 26 man squad. Tite came in for a lot of criticism due to the fact that he picked a veteran who was struggling with a knee injury. The manager said full-backs in his system don't necessarily need grass-scorching speed, and the 39-year-old had other qualities.

The man said before the match that he would be happy just playing the tambourine to keep his spirits up, but he proved that he isn't here just to make up the numbers. Given Brazil's injuries at full-back, he did a good job of keeping threats to his flank at bay.

It was bad for Elfath to have to send off the man.

After the match: What the players and managers said

It showed that we can be a top team and we can be proud of that. We didn't make it, so we're not very happy with tonight.

The opponent only needs a single chance if you don't kill the game. This is what took place. We finished first in the group. We can learn from it, even though it was a loss. We can't miss so many goals.
