If you want to enter federal government facilities without a U.S. passport, you will need to get a REAL ID.

Current driver's licenses aren't going away despite the fact that every U.S. citizen isn't required to get a REAL ID. If you are requesting a REAL ID, it is important to clarify with the Department of Motor Vehicle that you are specifically requesting a REAL ID. When making an appointment at the agency, the Department of Homeland Security suggests mentioning it.

It is mostly convenient. Unless they are going to leave the country, most Americans don't carry their passports. To visit a federal facility, you would have to bring it with you, according to an FAQ on her website.

Someone is required to get one.

Air travelers over the age of 18 will need a REAL ID compliant driver's license in order to fly domestically, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The deadline to get a REAL ID was moved up due to the coronaviruses.

If you have a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID, you can fly domestically. The person will be turned away at the security checkpoint if they don't have the proper identification.

Children under the age of 18 won't have to get a REAL ID. Children don't need to provide identification when traveling with a companion.

I don't know why I need one. Real IDs were created.

The REAL ID requirement was created in the wake of 9/11. The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 to strengthen security on flights and government buildings. The push to update the identification requirements was led by the Department of Homeland Security.

The terrorists used fake driver's licenses to get on the planes on the morning of 9/11. 18 of the hijackers had acquired some form of fraudulent ID, including 30 driver's licenses from various states.

I don't know how to get a real ID.

Some states allow online renewals for REAL ID, while others only allow it in person. What documentation is required to get a REAL ID can be found on your state's website. Documentation showing a person's full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, proof of principal residence and lawful citizenship status is required.

In North Carolina, proof of residency can be established by using any document issued by the state or federal government, a financial statement of some sort, or a receipt showing that property taxes have been paid. You can use a utility or cable bill, mortgage statement, property or income tax statement, a state vehicle registration card, voter card, vehicle insurance policy, school records or a letter from a homeless shelter.

It's important to double check to make sure you're in the right place, because each state has its own requirements for REAL IDs.

What is the difference between REAL IDs and regular driver's licenses?

Real IDs have a star on the upper right corner of the card, which makes it hard to tell the difference between old and new licenses. Their appearance will vary depending on the state that issues them, but the star should be easy to spot, with the colors white, gold or black.

The star is in an image of a bear. A simple star is used by other states.

Is this going to make travel safer?

The Department of Homeland Security is confident that REAL IDs will result in safer domestic air travel and more secure government buildings.

A vital component of our national security framework is secure driver's licenses and identification documents.

What about my data?

According to the federal government, the new standards are not for obtaining new and more detailed information on Americans. The goal is to make documents more secure.

Real ID doesn't create a database of driver license information. The DHS said on its website that each jurisdiction has its own license, records, and controls who can see them.
