Jeff Bezos paid former Amazon workers a small fortune to run his Montessori-inspired tuition-free preschool system.

According to an annual tax form analyzed by Bloomberg, Michael George was paid $800,000 plus $28,000 in benefits to oversee Bezos Academy, which consisted of just one school and 13 students for most of last year.

According to Bezos Academy's website, George spent more than two decades at Amazon and led consumer projects.

George's pay is much higher than that of a median nonprofit director, which was $294,000 in 2021.

George's pay is within a reasonable range of competitive market prices.

A former Amazon worker on the pre-K staff was paid a lot of money. The chief of operations at Bezos Academy was paid $463k in 2011. He worked at Amazon for nine years.

The Bezos Academy aims to nurture the potential in every child to become a creative leader, original thinker, and lifelong learner, and is free of charge.

Bezos Academy will open 15 more schools by the end of the year, according to a spokeswoman.

Since leaving his position as CEO of Amazon, Bezos has turned his attention to charity. The Giving Pledge is a promise by the world's wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to charity.
