Russia says the West's refusal to recognize "new territories" made peace talks harder.

The West's demand to pull out of Ukraine was not on the agenda of the talks.

Russia took control of four Ukrainian regions at the end of September.

It has lost more than half of the land it took.

President Biden told reporters on Thursday night that he was willing to meet the Russian leader if he decided to end the war.

The two men agreed that they wouldn't encourage the Ukrainians to make a compromise that would not be acceptable for them.

There was no sign of enthusiasm for talks after the flurry of activity. Russia's military has been forced into a retreat in southern Ukraine.

The Chancellor of Germany talked to the President of Russia on Friday. Berlin said the German leader had urged his counterpart to find a diplomatic solution that would involve pulling Russian troops out of Ukraine.

The German side pushed for the call, and Mr Putin urged Berlin to rethink its approach, according to the Kremlin. The Kremlin said that President Putin drew attention to thedestructive line of Western states including Germany.

The spokesman said that Mr Putin was open to talks to ensure our interests. President Biden said what he said, but Moscow was not ready to accept it. After Putin leaves Ukraine, negotiations are possible.

He said that the search for a mutual basis for talks was complicated by the fact that the US did not recognize new territories in Ukraine. At the end of September, President Putin declared four Ukrainian regions as part of Russia, but while Russian forces in eastern Ukraine occupy most of Luhansk, they are on the back foot in Kherson and Zaporizhia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that European countries had offered nothing concrete in terms of mediation.

He said thatMacron had been saying for the last two weeks that he was going to talk to the Russian president.

John Kerry, the former US Secretary of State, was named as the kind of person who could solve problems and engage in dialogue.

Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Friday that the time had come for a just peace for Ukraine, but it had to come through independence. He told La Repubblica that the Kremlin needs to give concrete signals.

The leader of the Church of England, Justin Welby, said there could be no peace until Russia stopped lying.

He said that there can't be a way forward based on lies. There were horrible things done here.

According to a senior Ukrainian official, between 10,000 and 13,000 of its soldiers have been killed since the start of the Russian invasion.

The Ukrainian military has not confirmed the comments by Mykhailo Podolyak, the presidential adviser.

Tens of thousands of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded since the start of the war, according to Mark Milley, the most senior US general.
