As the electric vehicle maker expands its offerings beyond passenger cars, it delivered its first electric semitrailer truck to the company.
The delivery event was held at a factory near Reno, Nevada, where Musk drove a semi to the event.
Depending on the model, the Semi has a range between 300 and 500 miles on a single charge.
"If you're a truck driver and you want the best rig on the road, this is it," said Musk at the event.
The delivery of the Semi trucks was a long time coming. The plan to deliver them in 2020 was delayed because of a shortage of parts and supply chain challenges.
According to a transcript of the call, Musk said that he wants to make 50,000 Semis in North America in four years. He said they would be much more expensive than a passenger vehicle.
The Cyber Truck and the 500-mile Semi would be shipped by 2023, according to Musk.
The company's Frito-Lay factory in California will be supported by the Semi trucks.
At the end of the event, Musk did not take any questions, which caused some skepticism over the vehicle's capabilities, according to the report. A senior analyst at Guidehouse told the news agency that moving a cargo of chips cannot be said to be a definitive proof of concept.
The company did not respond immediately to the request for comment.
