The Artemis 1 is going to come home.

After completing a lunar departure burn on Thursday, the uncrewed capsule will begin its journey back to Earth. At 4:54 p.m., the burn started. It lasted just under two minutes.

During the broadcast of the burn, Vereen announced that Orion had had a successful and nominal burn. On NASA Television's live broadcast, the "tiny Earth" glowed in the background as the solar panels rocking back and forth on the craft.

The trek home will last ten days. The capsule will land in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California in December. The end of the Artemis 1 mission will mark the beginning of training for the recovery operation.

NASA's most powerful moon rocket aced its first launch.

The Artemis 1 moon mission is live.

The space agency kicked off its Artemis 1 moon mission with the launch of its massive SLS rocket.

The goal of the Artemis program is to establish a crewed lunar outpost by the end of the decade.

The first Artemis mission was intended to be a test of both the SLS vehicle and the spaceship to make sure that both are flightworthy and safe to carry humans into deep space. The next mission, Artemis 2, will send astronauts to the moon in 2024. NASA will return astronauts to the moon no later than 25 years from now.

NASA says that Artemis 1 has met its goals so far. The vehicle performed as expected after the Nov. 16 launch, according to mission managers.

The first launch of the Space Launch System rocket was eye-watering. The rocket's systems performed as expected despite the fact that the mission is still underway and we are still learning.

There are amazing views of the Artemis 1 moon rocket debut.

All indications are that Orion has been doing well. A major milestone was achieved on Nov. 25 when the spacecraft was put into a retrograde position around the moon.

With today's burn, Orion now has a long and lonely journey home, and will send home gorgeous images and footage as it has throughout its flight so far.
