The graduate entered the transfer portal as a graduate on Monday. He suffered a leg injury in the third week of the season that required surgery.

Jim Harbaugh had McNamara and J.J. McCarthy compete for the starting quarterback job in the first two games of the 2020 season before he settled on McCarthy.

McNamara threw for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdown in 14 games as Michigan won its first Big Ten title in a decade and made its firstCFP appearance. He was the starting quarterback for the UM in 2020 and passed for 625 yards and five touchdown with no turnovers.

After initially committing to Notre Dame, he switched to Michigan.

After this season, Iowa loses multiyear starting quarterback Spencer Petras, and backup Alex Padilla enters the transfer portal as a graduate student.

Iowa ranked 123rd in scoring and 122nd in passing this year. The team finished the season with a.500 record.

McNamara is not the first quarterback to switch teams. Jake was a graduate of Harbaugh's first season at Michigan and began his career at Iowa. It was the second year in a row that a Michigan quarterback had passed 3000 yards.
