Mickey Joseph, Nebraska's interim football coach, is accused of putting his hands around a woman's throat, pulling her hair and punching her before being taken into custody.
Joseph was charged with strangulation and third degree domestic assault. He denied hitting the woman. Joseph was put on administrative leave.
Joseph appeared on video from the Lancaster County Jail. He didn't say anything. He wasn't allowed to have contact with the woman because his bond was so high. His next appearance was in January. Sean Brennan did not reply to the message.
There was a report of a domestic dispute at the residence.
The woman said Joseph pushed her and she fell onto the couch. Joseph put his hands around her throat.
She said that he put her on the couch and killed her. She said she was unable to breathe until she pushed him off.
She said that Joseph grabbed her hair from behind and pulled her backwards, causing her to fall to the floor. She said that Joseph hit her in the left temple when she fell.
She had redness and swelling around her left eye, which was consistent with being struck, and she had several strands of hair on her upper pant leg. She said Joseph pulled her hair.
The AP doesn't identify people who say they have been abused. The woman in the case has kept her identity a secret.
The woman claimed that Joseph tried to flush her phone down the toilet. The phone was found in a container of rice on the counter.
A relative of the woman told police that Joseph pushed the woman onto the couch after he yelled at him. Joseph was located by police at a different location.
Two days after Matt Rhule was introduced as the new head coach, Joseph was arrested. On Monday, Rhule said he would meet with Joseph to discuss his future on the staff. Rhule did not respond through the athletic department spokesman.
Joseph's annual salary is listed at $600,000. If he is convicted of a crime that impairs his ability to do his job, he could be fired. The university won't have to pay the remaining money if the firing is upheld.
Joseph had run-ins with the police while he was a quarterback for the Cornhuskers. After Scott Frost was fired, he was named interim head coach. The Cornhuskers were 3-6 under Joseph.
