Apple has decided to call the software that will run on its upcoming augmented reality/ virtual reality headset "xrOS," an update from the original RealityOS or "rOS" naming the company was planning on.
Ian Zelbo made a render based on rumors.
As Apple prepares for the launch of the headset, it has changed its name. Like the Apple TV and the Apple Watch, the headset will have its own operating system and an app store.
XR stands for extended reality and is related to both augmented and virtual reality. Apple is rumored to be working on a headset that will support both virtual and augmented reality. Virtual reality is a digital experience while augmented reality is a physical one.
New versions of existing apps like Maps and Messages will be included in the headset, which will be used for augmented and virtual reality experiences. Third-party apps will be able to be created for the headset with the creation of a software development kit.
While Apple referred to the headset's operating system as "rOS" during the development process, it is thought that xrOS will allow the headset to stand out more.
The xrOS name has been registered in several countries by a shell company, and Apple could possibly be behind it, according to a new report. Apple uses shell companies to try to register for trademarks
It's not clear when the headset will be introduced, but it's likely to be in the first half of the year to give developers time to create apps.
