The RealityScan app, which allows you to turn real-life objects into 3D models for video games or other projects, is now available for free on the App Store. If you want to recreate objects from the world around you, the app could be useful.
You can take a lot of photos of an object in the app. RealityScan shows each picture you have taken in augmented reality, as well as a heat map of where the object needs more coverage, when you take a picture of it. You will be able to preview your scans right from the app to see how it looks before you send it to Sketchfab. Everyone who uploads a Reality Scan to Sketchfab will get a free year of Sketchfab. Unreal Engine can be used to bring the model to the app.
This video will show you how it all works in practice.
The final app is easy to use and I messed around with the limited alpha and final app. The scans haven't turned out great, but I don't think the lighting in my house is ideal for them, and I'm using an iPhone 12 Mini, which doesn't have the best camera.
RealityScan is only available on the iPad and iPhone, but a version of the app for the phone is on the way.
The company's Meta Human technology was recently used to make a realistic recreation of NBA star Luka Doni. More than half of all announced next-gen games are made on Unreal Engine, and things like Reality Scan and the Meta Human Creator could help those developers as they build new games.
