Mazi Smith is facing felony charges for having a concealed weapon.
The charges were not filed until late November. Penalties include imprisonment for not more than five years or a fine not more than $2,500.
Smith is being represented by a lawyer.
Smith played in Michigan's game against Indiana and recorded five tackles.
The state of Michigan did not reply to the request.
In Michigan's perfect season, Smith has accumulated 43 total tackles. The team has a good chance of making it to the College Football Playoff if they win the Big Ten Championship against the Boilermakers.
Smith is ranked as one of the top five defensive tackles in the upcoming NFL draft by two experts.
