Boston Celtics center Al Horford has agreed on a two-year, $20 million contract extension that will keep him with the team through his 39th birthday in 2025, according to his agent.

Horford is in the last year of a four-year, $109 million contract. Horford will make $26.5 million this season and will get a new deal in 24 years.

Horford left the Celtics for a more lucrative free agency offer. The centers that could be free agents next summer are Indiana's Myles Turner, Chicago's Nikola Vucevic, Milwaukee's Brook Lopez, Dallas' Christian Wood, and San Antonio's Jakob Poeltl.

In his second stint with the Celtics, Horford has emerged as an important part of a title contender. He still holds a lot of respect inside the locker room and in the Boston community at 36 years old.

Horford was selected to the All-Defensive team and an All-Star.

Horford's appearance in the NBA Finals a year ago ended the league's longest playoff streak without a conference title.

In the absence of injured starting center Robert Williams III, the Celtics have relied on Horford to anchor their front line. Horford has shot 55.3% from the floor and 48.8% on 3-pointers, which is third highest among centers.

Horford was the fourth player in the shot-clock era to score 25 points on 75% shooting in a Finals debut, and he did it against the Warriors.

Horford took more shots in the NBA playoffs than any other player. He is one of five players to contest at least 400 shots in a single playoff game.

After leaving Boston for Philadelphia on a four-year, $109 million free agent deal, Horford was traded to Oklahoma City in 2020 and re-signed with the Celtics in 2021.

Horford played his first nine NBA seasons with the Atlanta Hawks before signing with the Boston Celtics in the off-season of 2016

Horford spent three years with the Celtics before moving to the 76ers and then to the Oklahoma City.
