According to reports, the Dutch government is planning to purchase and close down up to 3000 farms in order to comply with a European Union environmental mandate.

Farmers in the Netherlands will be offered a lot more than their farm's worth in order to take up the offer. If there isn't enough farmers to accept the buys, the country will make them.

Christianne van der Wal said there was no better offer coming.

The European Union should remove carbon removal methods from climate plans, according to environmental groups.

The farms targeted for compulsory purchase are close to sensitive areas.

According to the report, the Netherlands is trying to reduce its emissions to comply with EU rules and agriculture is responsible for half of the nitrogen emissions.

Every new activity that emits nitrogen is required to get a permit according to the Dutch Council of State. Major sources of nitrogen are dairy, pig and poultry farms.

Farmers are opposed to the new rules. During rush hour in October, thousands of tractor-trailers jammed up traffic.

Many feel that their industry is being unfairly targeted, while other sectors are not.
