The SLS rocket, the most powerful space vehicle ever to have launched, was used by NASA to propel the uncrewed capsule toward the moon in a mission designed to test the flight system for a crewed mission in about two years.

During its flight so far, the Orion has come within 80 miles of the lunar surface and traveled further from Earth than any human-rated craft. During the Apollo 13 mission, the previous record was set.

The world's most powerful rocket reached or exceeded all its performance targets, putting Orion on its way to the moon, according to Jim Free, NASA's associate administrator for exploration system development.

The ocean off the coast of California will be the location of the splashdown of the Orion. If NASA deems the mission a success, Artemis II will follow the same path as the current mission.

The Artemis III mission will be the first woman and first person of color to land on the moon.

Building a permanent base on the moon is one of the goals of NASA's Artemis program. The first human mission to Mars could happen in the 2030s if the moon acts as a stepping stone.
