Reed Hastings said the company would order Dave Chappelle's comedy specials again and again. Chappelle's last comedy special, The Closer, was criticized by employees for being transphobic.

Hastings said that they are trying to be the most exciting entertainment company and more. One of the most entertaining watch specials we have had. It would be done again and again by us. Chappelle is described by Hastings as being very entertaining and provocative, in line with the overall goal of the company.

The Closer was bought by the streaming service for over twenty million dollars. Many staff members were not comfortable with Chappelle's jokes about the LGBTQ+ community. A group of employees spoke out against the decision of the company to have the special on the platform. Two trans workers resigned and one was fired after they were accused of leaking information. Pages-Minor denied this claim.

Ted Sarandos said at the time that the platform doesn't allow titles that are designed toinspire hate or violence, but that the company doesn't believe "The Closer crosses that line." He apologized and said he had messed up. Recruiters were told how to avoid discussing The Closer with potential employees.
