The Carbon County Sheriff's Office is looking for information about a Wisconsin Rapids man whose remains were found in Montana in the 1980's.
Rogers "Roger" Lee Ellis told his family in 1976 that he wasn't going to jail because he didn't want to. According to the Carbon County Sheriff's Office, Ellis was arrested for marijuana possession and faced legal issues.
A hiker found a skull south of Red Lodge. The Sheriff's Office says that Montana is in Carbon County, Montana. Further skeletonized remains were found by officers. The remains were of a man who was between 15 and 32 years old. The analysts didn't find a match for the remains.
The Carbon County Sheriff's Office started a genetic genealogy investigation with help from the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI.
Ellis was believed to have been hitchhiking when he left Wisconsin. The person or people he was traveling with may have killed Ellis and left his body in Montana.
Ellis was identified by the Carbon County Sheriff's Office, but they don't want to stop there. The person or people who killed Ellis will be identified. Information from people who knew Ellis in the 70s will be used to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Carbon County Sheriff's Office.
The Carbon County Sheriff's Office is trying to locate additional information about Ellis and any of his friends or associates in 1976, as well as identifying any other similar cases in the region that may help identify those responsible for Ellis' death.
