According to the Financial Times, the European Union warned Musk that the platform will be banned if he doesn't tighten his moderation policies and eliminate his "arbitrary" approach to reinstating banned users.
The Digital Services Act requires social media platforms to remove hate speech and ban ads that target people based on political beliefs.
The Financial Times reported that people with knowledge of talks between the two said that Musk had to agree to an audit.
According to reports, Musk called the Digital Services Act "very sensible" and promised that Twitter's policies would comply with the law.
Musk did not reply immediately.
Nearly all banned accounts, including those that were suspended for hate speech, will be restored, according to Musk, who conducted a poll last week where 70% of respondents supported giving suspended accounts a reprieve. Just a few days after Musk reinstated Trump, a survey showed that almost half of respondents supported it. After taking over, Musk promised an "independent moderation council" would convene before any accounts were allowed back, but later scrapped the idea.
