In the future, police in San Francisco may be able to use a robot to kill a person.

On Tuesday, San Francisco's Board of Supervisors voted 8 to 3 to approve a policy that would give the city's police department permission to use remotely pilotedrobots to use lethal force in certain situations.

The policy is still being worked on. It needs to be approved by San Francisco's mayor before it becomes law.

Critics say the use of the killer robots is militaristic and will make people distrust the police. According to the outlet Mission Local, the policy states that robots can't be used as "Use of Force against any person." At the request of the San Francisco Police Department it was changed to allow for deadly force. According to the Washington Post, the department has a fleet of more than a dozen robot.

The policy gave police the power to kill people without due process of law. Tifanei Moyer told Mission Local that policies like this were not normal.

In a future where the police may use robots to execute people without a trial, jury, or judge, Moyer said. She said that legal professionals and ordinary residents shouldn't carry on if they think it's normal.

The police believe that lethal force could be useful in some situations. In an interview with the Post, a former Los Angeles Police Department lieutenant mentioned an incident in Dallas in which officers used a robot to kill a man who had killed five police officers. The Dallas incident was the first time a robot was used to kill a person.

The situation in Dallas wouldn't be the first on Bercovici's menu if he were in control. It could be an option if things were bad.
