The new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 can take a bigger beating than ever, so it might be the toughest screen on a phone yet. One of the most difficult surfaces to protect against is concrete, and for the first time, the company is advertising that your phone can survive a one-meter drop.

The company claims it is not making any compromises to get there. The new glass should still be able to survive a two-meter drop on a smooth asphalt surface, survive over 20 one-meter drops in a row, and shouldn't be any more prone to scratches. In the year before that, we explained how the company had to compromise on scratch resistance, but Victus was a big step forward.

It seems like a choice if there is a breakthrough in materials science that allows phones to survive drops on concrete. The company decided to protect against concrete with this generation of glass, adjusting the composition and stress profiles until engineers found something they liked.

Is concrete the reason? It's what phone makers wanted. More than 30% of the drops they were having were on concrete.

It wasn't always like that. It was about survival on smooth surfaces. People wouldn't break their phones until they dropped them on rough pavement. The majority of drop failures come on rough surfaces, such as asphalt or granite.

Concrete is the biggest pain point that can be crossed off the list.

Over the years, the weight and size of a phone have changed. They are 15 percent heavier and 10 percent bigger than they were four years ago. The company's tests account for the changes, as it now repeatedly drops a puck that weighs seven ounces facedown onto a piece of 80-grit sandpaper. There are heavier phones on the market, but the weight of the S22 Plus is roughly the same as the S22

It is not yet known if the Korean electronics giant will use the new glass. Apple chose to partner with Corning on its own exclusiveCeramic Shield glass instead of partnering with the first client for Gorilla GlassVictus.

I was told in 2020 that the glass would be on a flagship phone in the next few months. In the next few months, Victus 2 will be coming to some very large manufacturers and they are expected to launch their flagship phones. Maybe a new exclusive glass will be announced by the company.
