New data shows that food prices rose at a record rate in the year to November.

According to the British Retail Consortium, food inflation increased from October to November.

The cost of energy, animal feed and transport went up.

Helen Dickinson said the winter looked "increasingly bleak" as prices continued to go up.

The price of food, energy and fuel have gone up due to the war in Ukraine.

Overall shop price annual inflation increased to 7.4% in November from 6.6% in October. Since 2005, this rate has been the fastest.

Fresh food prices were up by 14.3% compared to 13.3% in October.

The winter looks bleak as pressures on prices continue. Meat, eggs and dairy have been hit the hardest by soaring energy costs and rising costs of animal feed.

Coffee prices went up last month as input costs went up.

Sports and recreation equipment will see particularly high increases, with Christmas gift costing more this year.

She said there were signs that cost pressures, and price rises, might start to ease next year, but Christmas cheer will be diminished this year as households cut back on seasonal spending in order to prioritize the essentials.

According to the research, shoppers will be managing their Christmas budgets more closely than at any time since the beginning of the cost-of-living crisis.

Retailers were trying to encourage shoppers to spend as we move into December with seasonal savings and price cuts.

The cost of basic food items, such as milk, cheese and eggs, has gone up at the fastest rate in 45 years.

Food price inflation in the year to October was 16.2%, up from 14.5% in September.
