Alex Ovechkin set an NHL record by scoring two goals in the first period of Tuesday night's game.
Wayne Gretzky had the most on visiting ice in NHL history, but Alex Ovechkin passed him for the most on the road.
It was Oviechkin's second multi goal game of the season and 160th of his career. Gretzky has more multi goal games in the NHL than any other player.
After beating Spencer Martin for the first time in his career, Oviechkin opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. It was Ovechkin's 135th game- opening goal and tied Jaromir Jagr for the most in NHL history.
He followed that up with his 13th goal of the year. Dylan Strome and Anthony Mantha were involved in that tally. The first period ended with Washington leading.
When Martin was brought in for an extra skater with just over six minutes left, his rocket of a shot skimmed the outside of the post as he was about to score his second goal of the game. Martin Fehervary scored on the empty net at 15:44 of the third period to seal the deal.
The NHL record for most goals scored with one franchise was set earlier this month by Washington's Alex Ovechkin, who broke a tie with Detroit's Gordie Howe. The record-breaking goal was scored in a loss to the Arizona Coyotes.
In the Eastern Conference, the Caps have struggled this season, but they have not been able to stop their star player. He is the team's leading scorer with 23 points, and his 20:57 time-on-ice average was the best among Washington forwards.
