Update: As of today (November 29, 2022), Iberia Plus is awarding Avios based on how much you spend. Previously the start date wasn’t published. You can find the updated post below. |
British Airways and Iberia are moving to accrual based on revenue. It is being spun as a positive change in the airline industry because there is no such thing as a negative change in the airline industry.
The amount of money you spend on your flights is the basis of how much you'll get for your ticket. The old system will continue to work for tickets purchased before November 29.
You can still redeem for award flights even though the way you qualify for status is still based on tier points.
Depending on your status, you can earn up to 8x avios per euro spent.
Extra services, such as extra baggage and seat selection, which previously didn't earn members anything, are now earning them.
These changes are described by the Loyalty Director.
“We think this is a more fair and transparent way to reward our more loyal members, with a model that they have been requesting for some time and which is also more in line with other industry loyalty programmes.”
Is this something that loyal members have been requesting for a long time? Hmm...
The British Airways Executive Club will adopt a similar model in the years to come. It is not known when this will go live, and if the earnings rates will be the same, or if they will be based on the pound.
Ian Romanis is the head of retail and customer relationship management at British Airways.
“We congratulate our colleagues at Iberia for introducing this change and we look forward to joining them in 2023. More announcements will follow about what this change will mean for our Executive Club programme, which will unlock even more opportunities for our Members to earn Avios when they fly.”
The British Airways Executive Club and the Iberia Plus are going in a different direction. The change will be made by British Airways at some point in the future.
I don't think there's anything I can say that hasn't been said before, as these are not the first airlines to move in this direction.
What do you think about British Airways Executive Club and Iberia Plus changing the way they earn their awards?
