Bulls Rumors: Billy Donovan Signed Contract Extension Before 2022-23 Season

The Chicago Bulls are 11th in the Eastern Conference at 9-11, but they won't be looking for a new coach soon.

The Athletic's Shams Charania reported Tuesday that the Bulls agreed to an extension with their star player before the start of the 2022-23 NBA season.

The Bulls went to the playoffs last year for the first time in two years.

The Bulls would've finished higher if Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso hadn't missed so many games. Patrick Williams only made 17 appearances.

Even though he had two years left to run on his original contract, giving him an extension made sense because he largely achieved what the team set out to do.

The front office has not had any buyer's remorse just yet.

Sam Smith of the Bulls' official site said that Ball may not be on the court until January after undergoing knee surgery.

When he was named to the All-Star team for the second year in a row, LaVine was struggling to match the pace he set. He's shooting 40.4 percent overall and 20.9 points, down from 24.4 and 24.4 respectively.

It was difficult to find fault with the decision to bench LaVine late in the game. The star guard missed all five of his three point attempts.

"If things don't go to plan, Billy was put in his potential fall guy", according to The Athletic.

It's the best reflection of the situation. Arturas Karnisovas is the executive vice president of basketball operations for the Bulls.

Karnisovas and Eversley put together a roster with a ceiling. Chicago doesn't have a clear path forward.

The cost of firing him went up due to his new contract.
