A Biden administration official has been charged with felony theft and is on leave from their post after being accused of taking a Vera Bradley suitcase from an airport in Minnesota.
Sam Brinton is the deputy assistant secretary of the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition at the Department of Energy. A complaint was filed last month about the airport.
According to the court documents obtained by Insider, the roller bag is worth $2,325.
Brinton was caught on camera taking the Vera Bradley luggage from the carousel after arriving at the airport.
Records from American Airlines show Brinton never checked a bag before they left Washington DC, according to the court papers.
The complaint says Brinton was caught on camera checking into a hotel with a bag.
Brinton was seen checking the bag before he boarded the flight back to Washington DC, according to the documents. According to investigators, Brinton was seen on video carrying the bag at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia after returning from Europe.
Brinton denied taking someone else's bag when he was contacted by a Minnesota police officer.
I don't have any clothes for another person so I'm happy to return the wrong bag. Brinton told the officer that his clothes were in the bag.
According to the complaint, Brinton apologized to the officer for not being completely honest.
Brinton told the officer that they picked up the wrong bag at the airport and only realized when they got to the hotel.
Brinton got nervous people would think they stole the bag and didn't know what to do, according to the complaint.
Brinton admitted to police that they took the bag back to the airport after leaving the clothes in the hotel room.
Brinton thought it would be weird to leave the luggage in the hotel room instead of the clothes, according to the court papers.
The Vera Bradley bag was not recovered from the hotel room where Brinton stayed and the owner of the bag has not been able to get it back.
Brinton is on leave from the Department of Energy and Dr. Kim Petry is performing the duties of the deputy assistant secretary of spent fuel and waste disposal.
An attorney for Brinton did not reply to a request.
Brinton, who is one of the federal government's first openly "gender fluid" employees, could face up to five years in prison. They will make their first court appearance in Minnesota on December 19
