American Airlines' Terminal 8 is being renovated at New York's JFK airport. British Airways is moving to JFK Terminal 8 and is introducing some new lounges.

The lounges are expected to open on December 1, 2022, so I wanted to cover all the details in this post.

The basics of JFK Terminal 8 changes

$400 million has been invested to make JFK Terminal 8 better. Changes include five new wide body gates, four new wide body hardstand parking positions, an enhanced baggage handling system, and 130,000 square feet of new and renovated terminal space.

The remote stands will only be used to park planes that are on the ground for an extended period of time. Good news.

JFK Terminal 8 is growing

British Airways will only operate out of Terminal 8 as of December 1, 2022. It is great news that American and British Airways have a joint venture.

American and Terminal 7 will both be demolished as part of the airport's redevelopment, so British Airways needs to move because of that.

American & British Airways new premium check-in facility JFK

With American and British Airways co-locating at Terminal 8, we will soon see a new co- branded premium check-in facility open. The Flagship First Check-in space, which closed in early 2022, was replaced by this one.

Depending on your status and class of service, the counter will be different.

American & British Airways new premium lounges JFK

Changes will be made to lounges. The new lounges at Terminal 8 will be able to hold up to 1000 customers at a time. You can expect elements from both airlines in these lounges.

It's kind of brilliant that the lounges are named after New York and London. We know a lot about the lounges.

Chelsea Lounge New York JFK

The new lounge will be the most exclusive in the terminal and will replace American's first dining facility. Current lounges are located in the terminal. An a la carte dining room, champagne bar, and luxury showers will be included in the new lounge.

The lounge will be open on certain days.

  • British Airways first class passengers
  • American Airlines Flagship First passengers (including on eligible transcon flights)
  • American Airlines Flagship Business Plus passengers (this is a special bundle that can be purchased)
  • American Airlines Concierge Key members on Flagship itineraries
  • British Airways Gold Guest List members

The two pictures that have been released so far look like a downgrade compared to Flagship First Dining. There is no natural light, and the décor just looks good. Flagship First Dining wouldn't have enough space to accommodate British Airways passengers.

Soho Lounge New York JFK

The second lounge in the terminal will be called the Soho Lounge. The lounge will be in a different location than the current lounges in the terminal. There will be a buffet, a wine bar, a cocktail lounge, and a library at the Soho Lounge.

The lounge will be open.

  • American AAdvantage Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members on Flagship itineraries
  • oneworld Emerald members with foreign programs on any same day oneworld itinerary
  • American Airlines Concierge Key members on non-Flagship itineraries

This isn't something that American previously had, so it's nice to see this concept coming to Terminal 8.

Greenwich Lounge New York JFK

The American Flagship Lounge will be changing its name. Premium wine table, expansive seating, and chef inspired meals are what we are told to expect. The Flagship Lounge had a lot of changes compared to this one. Flagship First Dining's space will no longer be operational, so we don't know what will happen to it.

There will be a lounge open to the public.

  • British Airways business class passengers
  • American Airlines Flagship Business passengers (including on eligible transcon flights)
  • American AAdvantage Platinum members on Flagship itineraries
  • oneworld Sapphire members with foreign programs on any same day oneworld itinerary

British Airways offered business class passengers pre-flight dining in Terminal 7 and while this is a pleasant lounge, I think it's a downgrade.

Bottom line

British Airways is moving to the American Airlines terminal at JFK. As of December 1, 2022, you can expect all the new lounges to be up and running.

First class passengers and oneworld Emerald members will be able to use the new Soho Lounge. The Flagship Lounge will be renamed the Greenwich Lounge and will be open to business class passengers.

What do you think of the lounges?
