A new distance record has been set for a spaceship that will carry humans to space.
On Monday, the uncrewed spacecraft, which is currently in a distant retrograde orbit around the moon, reached a point at which it will travel from our planet during the Artemis I mission. It traveled 43,051 miles from the moon as it traveled through space.
The previous record for the farthest distance traveled by a human-rated spaceship was set in 1970 by Apollo 13
The current mission launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on November 16 and is a dry run for a crewed flight that will take the same path in four years.
The image shared by NASA shows the moon and Earth far away.
NASA has plenty of time to fully test its systems in an environment far from Earth thanks to DRO. The craft came within 80 miles of the moon.
The SLS rocket is used by NASA to put its ships into space. The SLS is the most powerful space vehicle of all time.
The space agency said that the performance of the spaceship has surpassed expectations. The capsule will land off the coast of California on December 11 if the mission continues.
The Artemis II and Artemis III missions aim to put the first woman and first person of color on the moon. The International Space Station is similar to how astronauts stay on the moon for extended periods of time.
