South Carolina was the unanimous top choice in The Associated Press women's basketball poll.

Boston left a game with an injury and the Gamecocks received all 29 first-place votes. Boston was "questionable" going forward, but the doctor wasn't too concerned, according to the coach.

The next game is against UCLA.

After playing in a tournament in Hawaii, the second ranked team remained unchanged. Tara VanDerveer is tied with Pat Summitt for most appearances. Summitt's teams missed out on being in the polls 14 times.

The top five were: Connecticut, Ohio State, Indiana and Ohio State.

The Big East has four teams in this week's poll, and one of them is the University of Connecticut. Since the Big East realigned, there have been four ranked teams. The league went 8-2 against ranked teams this year.

The Big East has been trying to earn more respect. I tried to schedule tougher non- conference games. People are being played by 'Nova'. We went to the Bahamas and it was wonderful. They've been doing what they've been doing. Quality wins are what it's all about.

The state of North Carolina moved up two places. Iowa State was in the tournament. The Iowans fell to 8th.

The Tar Heels play the Hoosiers on Tuesday in the Big Ten challenge. In Las Vegas, Indiana won two games at a venue that didn't provide basic necessities.

Virginia Tech and Iowa rounded out the top 10. Virginia Tech is in the top 10 for the first time in over a decade.

The Lady Vols fell out of the poll this week for the 56th time in the last 900 weeks. Kansas State fell out of the top 25 as well.

Falling cards.

South Dakota State defeated Louisville in the fifth place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis last week, dropping the Cards to 18th in the poll. It's the lowest ranking in a long time.

It had been 98 weeks since Louisville was last in the top 10. It was active for a long time.
