Houston Mallette makes a sweet dime to Jan Zidek for 3 (0:17)

Houston Mallette made a dime.

12:12 PM ET

It's time to make some room. The Houston team has made it to the top.

The group led by Marcus and Jarace took over the top spot in the AP Top 25 on Monday. The national media panel gave them 45 of 63 first-place votes.

We didn't go online and apply for it and wait for a reply. Houston is coming off a Final Four and Elite Eight trip in the past two years. It is a rental. You do not own it. Someone else is going to be the top dog someday.

Houston beat Kent State in its only game last week to take over the top spot from North Carolina, which lost to Iowa State and to Alabama in four overtimes.

The last time the team was in the top spot was in 1982, when coach Guy Lewis and his players were the favorites to win it all. They went through the NCAA tournament before losing to Jim Valvano and North Carolina State in the title game.

In his 34th season as a college basketball coach, he has never been ranked top. We were ranked all the time. We were ranked at Indiana. We've been ranked for a long time. We're used to being successful.

Texas and Virginia got two votes each. Arizona went from 14th to fourth after winning the MauiInvitational. After winning at the Phil Knight Legacy tourney, the Boilermakers jumped from 24th to fifth and received eight first-place votes.

Our guys are willing to compete. It's fun to coach them. They work well together. "They're out there playing with purpose and that's what you have to have." said Boilermakers coach Matt Painter.

He said that early in the season, few teams play together. I thought our guys were playing for something.

After beating Oregon, Alabama and Iowa State, Connecticut climbed from 20th to 8th. Tennessee defeated Kansas in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, dropping the Jayhawks from third to ninth.

Alabama and Arkansas were tied for 11th place with the Volunteers right behind them. It was the first time since February of last year that the Jesuits were outside the top 10.

Illinois was next followed by Duke and North Carolina. After their loss to the Boilermakers, the Blue Dukes fell from 8 to 7.

UCLA, Maryland, Iowa State, San Diego State and Ohio State rounded out the poll.

Falling and rising.

The poll went through a huge shake-up and the Boilermakers made a 19-spot jump. Arizona, Tennessee, and Alabama all moved up in the rankings. The Tar Heels fell 17 spots, Duke fell nine, and San Diego State fell seven.

In and out.

Iowa State was the only newcomer this week and they were the only ones to win games. Iowa dropped out of the Emerald Coast Classic after a loss to TCU in the title game.

There is a conference watch.

In the first seven teams, there are six different conferences. The Big Ten has six in the Top 25 while the SEC and the Big 12 have four each.
