1. Elm, one of Switzerland's best-kept secret ski destinations

One of the best kept secrets in Switzerland is the ski area around the small village of Elm. It's still popular with locals even though it's where Vreni Schneider grew up. The village has great slopes and mountain views of the world heritage site of sardona. There is a stone hole in the mountains on the other side of the valley.

'Elmer Citro,' Switzerland's most popular lemonade, is available when you're all tuckered out. The Munggehtte is famous for its delicious meals and party atmosphere.

2. Braunwald, a remote delight with charming horse-drawn carriages

Braunwald is car-free and can be reached via a cable train. The village is a great place for a family day out. The hotels are warm and welcoming.

The skiing area offers modest slopes for beginners that take you through enchanted forests and past romantic wooden Alpine huts. For the more advanced riders, there are steep slopes further up the mountains, where the tiny mountain restaurant is located.

3. Flumserberg, closest to Zürich with some truly inspiring views

Flumserberg is the biggest mountain escape from Zrich and has the most impressive view. Flumserberg is located high above the Walensee and is next to the grand Churfirsten.

The ski area has a variety of slopes and challenging black labeled ones when there is enough snow. There is a park for snowboarders, winter hiking trails, sledding, and many other activities for children and the young at heart. You can take a gondola all the way to the top of Maschgenkamm without having to change ski lifts. The first section of the mountain is often icy and steep.

4. Zürich Oberland, great for beginners and budget travelers

You can still have fun in the idyllic Zrich Oberland mountain villages even though they don't have the highest mountains. Steg has the longest ski lift in Zrich. If you don't want to spend a lot of money in a big ski area and just want to shred, these ski areas are great.

Since you won't see a lot of tourists, the towns are a great place to get in touch with locals. Warm up with a bowl of soup and some hot cider. Lifts only work when there is enough snow.

You have to see the views to believe.

5. Hoch-Ybrig, the young and hip destination

If you like urban snowboard vibes but don't want to go all the way to Laax, you can go to Hoch-Ybrig. Schwyz is an hour's drive away from Zrich. The young and hip of Zrich gather on the weekends to trade the grey skies of the city for some sunbathing and skiing.

The slopes are varied and widespread, the views of the Swiss alps are amazing, and the crowd is great. Paragliding is one of the activities you can take part in.

6. Wildhaus, where the more approachable slopes welcome all

You can see the Churfirsten when skiing in Flumserberg. You can go down their backside from the valley of Toggenburg. Wildhaus is part of the Alpstein mountain massif. It is close to Zrich so it gets a bit crowded on the weekends.

The summit restaurant is on top of the chserrug. A new standard for mountain lodging has been set by this eco-friendly building.
