Despite his limited involvement in the first two group matches, Phil Foden still has a big part to play in the World Cup.
Foden came on after 71 minutes in the win over Iran, but didn't play in the draw with the US.
"We love Phil, he's a super player," said Southgate, who has guided England to four points from two games in the Middle East.
He is going to be a big part of this tournament.
Since making his debut in 2020, Foden has earned 19 England caps.
After being introduced late in England's opening Group B win against Iran, he was left on the bench during the goalless draw with the US as he was brought on to try and break the deadlock.
He praised Foden's attitude before the final group game against Wales, even though he acknowledged it was impossible to keep everyone happy.
Phil's approach to training and how he approaches everything is excellent.
Foden has multiple attributes that make him a good fit in the team.
There are options. He can play either flank or as a false nine if we choose to do that.
"Although he doesn't do that much at club level so that's maybe applicable to certain games or certain moments, he can play off a goal scorer."
He is a very flexible player and can have an impact on the game. He is a goal threat as well.
Wales needs to win and hope for a draw between the United States and Iran to stand any chance of progressing, while England needs to avoid a four-goal defeat on Tuesday.
There were suggestions that the team was under pressure from taking on another home nation.
It's not more than normal. "Everyone wants to beat us but we're England and we know this is a game with a lot of focus."
It's high expectations when we're on the field. We need to focus on playing as well as we can while showing that composure and ruthlessness that will be needed to win.
