Sean O'Connell died recently, according to his brother.
The Boilermakers secured their first Big Ten West title and a spot in the conference championship game against Michigan with a 30-16 win over Indiana on Saturday. "O'Connell has a lot going on right now", but didn't elaborate.
O'Connell thanked the people who supported him in a statement. Sean O'Connell died, but no details have been given.
"Sean was a better son, brother and friend than he was a football fan," said O'Connell. All that knew him testified to his joy. We rely on the lord to give us strength and hope, and we appreciate your prayers during this time.
O'Connell earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2021. He had two touchdown passes in the win over Indiana.
