This winter is not expected to be a good time to travel. While rates for hotels and flights tend to drop after the holiday highs, resilient demand for travel means higher prices at both ski and beach destinations. With flexibility and creativity, you can still travel for less this season.

InnTravel will introduce two new snow breaks for non-skiers who want to explore the quieter side of winter. There are opportunities to visit the landmark castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau on a seven- night trip to Germany. Travelers can take a seven-night trip to the northwestern part of the country, which includes a visit to the edge of the national park and walks around the lakes. The trips start at 1, 150 British pounds a person and include lodging, airport transfers, local bus travel, many meals and some guided activities.

If you want to ski in the spring, Lake Tahoe is a good place to go. In April of last year, when most of the major resorts were preparing to close down for the season, I visited a place on the lake's west coast that offers skiing that can last into May and beyond. Lift tickets were less than $100 a day, and most of the mountain was open, despite the fact that the snow was soft in places.

The organizers of the Great Northern Festival hope that winter stays in Minnesota. 5, highlights the unique winter culture of this northern region with outdoor film screenings, performances, Nordic ski races and tours. Most of the events are free and some require a ticket. Climate change is one of the topics covered in the winter celebrations. The executive and artistic director of the festival said that the culture of the cold, snowy winters is at risk due to the warm climate.

Camden Snow Bowl is the only remaining toboggan chute in the United States. On weekends and holidays, the Jack Williams Toboggan Chute is open to the public as long as Hosmer Pond is open.

The Rideau Canal is a great place to go to skate when circling the rink. The Rideau Canal Skateway is the world's largest skating rink and hosts more than half a million skaters over the course of two months. Open around the clock, the frozen canal combines exercise and a city tour, passing landmarks such as the Canadian Parliament building and the Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel, with lots of opportunities to stop for drinks and snacks. For two hours, capital skates rents blades for 25 Canadian dollars.

The island of Grenada has a reputation for being exclusive. Travelers can find more affordable hotels in the new Simple Stays Grenada collection. Three cottages in a garden by the sea, Mount Edgecombe Plantation, and an original spice storage building are included.

There are budget lodgings in Costa Rica and Panama, as well as luxury resorts in Panama. Panama is cheap due to its robust flight network and national park within minutes of the capital. There is a 40-minute drive from the airport in Panama City to Soberana National Park, a rainforest preserve where the Panama Canal meets the Chagres River. In the park, you can take an aerial tram through the forest canopy and night safaris aboard a tram. Travelers can stay in Panama for up to seven days and then continue on to another destination for a single fare. There was a $700 round trip from New York to Panama in December.

Street food is a great way to keep travel costs in check. You can try Mexico City's celebrated carnitas and escamocho on the tour. A progressive meal of almost a dozen dishes from stalls and restaurants is included in the tour. The money spent during theculinary walk goes to support businesses that we believe in, helping to preserve the social and cultural fabric of the cities we love so much. You can go it alone at the Mercado La Merced, where you can find a wide range of food and drink.

For the past 15 years, history buffs interested in visiting Pigeon Key in the Florida Keys had to take a boat from Marathon in the middle of the island chain. The Pigeon Key Express took up to 60 passengers on an open-car, train-style tram to the island. Visitors are free to swim, snorkel, fish and picnic on their own during the guided tour of Pigeon Key. The 2.2 mile span has reopened after being closed for five years for renovations.

Hawaii was not a cheap destination before the lockdown, but several new or improved hotels are keeping rates reasonable. The Ka'anapali Beach Hotel in Lahaina, Maui, offers guests complimentary lessons in hula dancing, Hawaiian language and ukulele playing. Wayfinder Waikiki will open in December with a swimming pool, a branch of Redfish and beach gear. Twin fin will open in November on the beach in Waikiki with a video stream of surf conditions in the lobby and music at the pool.
