I was aware of how bad traveling with toddlers could be. A friend said it stops being a vacation and becomes a trip after she returned from her first big family vacation. Many versions of the same story were found on social media.

After our most recent trip, my wife and I were able to enjoy travel with a toddler on a beach without waves.

The realization occurred while sitting in the warm shallow waters off Holbox Island. As I watched my daughter splash around it hit me that it was both exciting for her and relaxing for me. She was kept fully engaged far longer than her 2-year-old attention span could allow. The wave-free shallowness, as far as you could throw a frisbee, freed me from the worry I had at other beaches. I was immersed in 83-degree water and enjoyed the view, rather than watching children fight over water blasters.

I wondered where else we could find calm water. Waves lose their strength before they reach shore. Bob Guza, an oceanographer at the University, said that if there is a harbor wall, reef or a small piece of land around a cove, the waves will break there.

Waves tend to be related to shallowness. Kevin B. Johnson is a professor at the Florida Institute of Technology.

From an off-the-grid tropical hideaway to a reefside diving resort, there are 7 new escapes in the Caribbean.

Can Responsible Travel to Hawaii be fun?

There is a key to vacationing with a toddler. A Wave-Free Beach is a family friendly guide to destinations that are basically bathtubs.

Creole cooking classes, boisterous street parties, a tour of a cacao plantation, and visits with islanders preserving local traditions can be found on the island of St. Lucia.

As cruise companies head into their busiest season, they say they have ambitious plans to curb greenhouse emissions.

There are many beaches in the Caribbean, Central America and Hawaii that are wave-free.

Though these shallow spots will likely build children's confidence, it's worth remembering that they can drown in the water.
