The Rugby Football Union will conduct a review into England's disappointing autumn campaign but have stopped short of giving their support to Eddie Jones.
The RFU review panel will hold a number of meetings over the next two weeks to discuss the autumn series.
Bill Sweeney is the CEO of the union.
He said that they were disappointed with the results.
Despite strong individual performances and some great new talent coming through, the overall results are not where we expected them to be.
It's important to us that England fans feel supported.
The head coach's position is under scrutiny after five wins from 12 matches in the calendar year.
Dispensing with Jones at this stage would be a huge deviation from the RFU's plan, with both union and head coach focused on next year's Rugby World Cup in France.
According to the union sources, they can't comment on his position ahead of the review because they don't know.
The RFU supported Jones and praised the progress of the team despite two wins from five Championship matches.
Jones would struggle to survive given the recent results, according to a former England fly-half.
Do you change and change direction if your four-year plan begins to fall apart? He said that you probably do.
The higher-ups have to decide if the investment is worth it. It would be a waste of the last three and a half years if we changed now.
The RFU and Bill Sweeney have been very supportive of Eddie Jones. He is the right man to take us to the World Cup.
It's not going to happen, that's why we always say it's not going to happen. He's going to stay and his boss thinks he's the guy.
The RFU review panel will meet soon to discuss how improvements can be made ahead of the Six Nations.
Board and executive members, along with independent former players and coaches, make up the panel.
