A trip to the video store was something that grew up with me. It was like a Christmas where my mom would turn my sister and I loose and pick out a movie to rent for the weekend. She would sometimes give in to our demands and allow us to take home a Sega console. An employee of Video Update would retrieve it for us and make sure that the controllers and cords were all accounted for in a suitcase.

It looked like that in 1993. Things are not as they used to be. I took our game console to a family vacation a few weeks ago. Thanks to the Genki Covert Dock Mini, it all fit into a couple of clutch-sized cases that I could easily put in my purse. We had a Pro controller, a switch, and a few cords. We had a console ready for our trip to the Washington coast.

Theswitch is a console I'm aware of this. Have you attempted to play Breath of the Wild in handheld mode after playing it on the big screen? It doesn't feel good. The Joy-Con drift is so bad that it is barely usable. The Nintendo-made dock is supposed to be used with the switch. Ours isn't good.

The switch failed in the winter because of interaction between the dock and TV. I spent hours trying to figure out the problem with different display settings on both the TV and the switch. Even the customer support person I talked to didn't see the Nintendo support pages. We got a replacement console from Nintendo, but the emotional damage was done, and I lost all trust in our dock.

I only used the Switch to play Animal Crossing because it wasn't much better on the big screen and I didn't want to ruin the experience. I wanted to play BotW again. With a trip coming up that would involve a downtime indoors in our rented condo, I now had two reasons to invest in the Genki dock.

The Switch in its carrying case, and everything else in a little pencil pouch. What a time to be alive.

The Genkidock is small enough that it was delivered to our mailbox rather than the front door. The 5W AC adapter that came with my last phone was a little larger. The switch dock provided power to the console and a display connection to a TV. It is less useful if you want it to be a hub for other power hungrier devices than it is if you want it to be more useful. $50 instead of $75 is what it is.

I wiped a tear from my eye as I put the controller in a pouch. The Switch, dock, and accoutrement took up less space in my luggage than my items. At our condo, we plugged it all in, and in a matter of minutes, we were running through the jungle.

It has become our full-time dock. It will remain uncursed, and we can spend the rest of the dark, cold months basking in the glow of our Switch games on the TV once again. That is just as exciting as a Friday afternoon at the video store.
