The most successful tenure in program history came to an end with David Shaw's resignation.

Shaw said that one phrase keeps coming to him - it's time. The love and gratitude I feel for my family, all of my former and current players, my staff, this administration and the entireStanford family is not enough. Thanks to you all.

The all-time record for wins in program history was set by Shaw over the course of 12 seasons. The 50-year-old began his career with eight straight winning seasons and reached a New Year's Six game four times.

The last four seasons have seen the program fall off. Shaw left after going 14-28 since the beginning of the year.

Shaw was once considered a hot candidate for a head-coaching job in the National Football League.

Shaw said that he was not burnt out. I feel great. It is a long time. Everybody catches up to you after 16 years of being responsible for everything.

Jim Harbaugh hired Shaw to be the offensive coach at Cardinal. After Harbaugh left for the San Francisco 49ers, he was named head coach. In Shaw's first five seasons, the Cardinal won three Pac-12 titles and were ranked third in the country.

Shaw drew praise for doing less with more, but the program has not kept up with the times.

Shaw said thatStanford doesn't change quickly. They are methodical. It's been hard for everyone.

Shaw played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Las Vegas Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens. He's not going to be at the top of as many lists as he would have been four or five years ago, but that doesn't mean he won't get an NFL coaching position.
