A video producer lost his job and decided to build a tiny home in the backyard of his house.

While looking for another job, he launched a YouTube channel to keep him afloat and documented the process of building his tiny home.

The small home was built in four months for under $6,000. He wants to build more and rent them out for holidays.

The French doors were given to the home by the father. Jacob.

He says he has always been a do-er. He learned to fix things by watching videos on the internet. He used to work for CNN. He made a small office in a week.

He converted the tiny office into a house after being made redundant.

He said that the idea came from wanting to start a business renting out tiny homes as the idea was popular at the time because of the corona virus.

It was more difficult to get planning permission to rent it out than he thought.

Recycling wood

It took a week for the frame of the office to be built. At that time, the frame was a shed on wheels. I designed and built the tiny home.

The table and chairs were made from wood that had been recycled. Four months was the time it took for the job to be completed. I didn't do any of the things I learned from the internet as a child.

The back window and French doors were given to him by his father. He said he saved a lot of money by using spare wood. The tiny home was built using recycled timber and cedar wood. Leftover boards of timber were used to make the hut.

As he did all the work himself, it cost less than $6,000 to build his tiny home. It doesn't have a bathroom and he's going to build a separate structure. There is a kitchen, folding tables, solar panels and steps to the sleeping area.

There is a woven exterior of the tiny house. He twisted willow and hazel wood to make it look like a tiny house. He said that it looked at home in the surroundings of the woods.

Pros and cons

Being creative and learning new skills is the most rewarding part of the job. The process of building something with your hands is very rewarding.

Getting permission to turn it into a holiday rental has been one of the greatest challenges. There are obstacles to renting the tiny home to tourists. The process for changing the use of land for tourism and renting out more than one tiny house is complex.

Building a tiny home is cheaper than buying a house, but the legalities of it are very difficult.
