As the Moon mission proceeded successfully, officials said that NASA's Orion spacecraft had been placed in lunarorbit.
The US space agency said on its website that flight controllers successfully performed a burn to insert the spaceship into a retrograde position.
The first humans to set foot on the Moon's surface in 42 years will happen in the next few years.
The vehicle is being tested without a crew on board.
"Orion will fly about 40,000 miles above the Moon, which is far away from the Earth's equator," NASA said.
The agency said flight controllers will monitor key systems and perform checkouts while in deep space.
It will take about a week for him to complete half of his lunar journey. According to NASA, it will leave the space for the return journey.
The ship is expected to travel up to 40,000 miles beyond the Moon on Saturday, a record for a capsule. The current record for farthest from Earth is held by the Apollo 13 spaceship.
After just over 25 days of flight, it will land in the Pacific Ocean on December 11th.
The future of the Artemis 2 and Artemis 3 missions will be determined by the success of this mission.
There are two missions that are scheduled to take place in the next two decades.
