According to multiple reports, a furniture company in Mississippi fired 2,7000 workers just days before Thanksgiving.
Thousands of workers received a text message from UFIP stating that they were no longer allowed to return to work.
The New York Post reviewed the message, which said that the company had to make the difficult decision to fire all of its employees.
A federal law allows employees who lose their jobs the option to keep their employer-sponsored health insurance under certain circumstances.
The company's drivers were told to return equipment, inventory and delivery documents if they did not complete their delivery.
There was no explanation for why employees were terminated so suddenly. On Tuesday, UFI sent out an update about their belongings being retrieved.
The email said that as soon as the property manager can provide a safe and orderly process for former employees, they will do so.
Many employees expressed shock and frustration after they were abruptly fired.
One employee said that it was unfair to the laborers who worked so hard. It doesn't make sense to the mom who just had a baby to wonder if she has health insurance. It doesn't make sense to the cancer patient about how to pay for her treatment.
TJ Martin, one of the employees, toldWLBT: "This has been a drastic shock to every one of us, especially when you're told to be ready to hit it hard Monday." We are all devoted to the company. We are considered family members by both of us.
The company is accused of violating the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act by not giving at least 60 days notice of its shut down.
