If the Welsh Rugby Union decide to replace Wayne Pivac, Warren Gatland is likely to return as Wales coach.
Ten months before the World Cup starts, the WRU is holding a review that will consider Pivac's position.
Wales lost to New Zealand, Georgia and Australia in a row.
There is a chance that Gatland will be in line for an interim role.
A decision has not been made to part company with Pivac.
Gatland is a top target but other people have also been considered.
The review is expected to last at least a week and will affect everyone.
In Gatland's 12 years in charge, Wales won four Six Nations titles and reached two World Cup semi- finals.
He returned to New Zealand to be the head coach.
Gatland was named the head coach of the British and Irish Lions for a third time.
Over the last month, Gatland has been commentary on games for Amazon Prime, including three Wales internationals.
During the Wales and Australia coverage on Saturday, Gatland said he had not been contacted by the WRU about a possible role.
The Georgia loss came eight months after a home defeat by Italy in the Six Nations.
After a 34-13 lead was surrendered by the Australia side, the Wallabies scored 26 unanswered points to win the game.
During Pivac's three-year tenure, Wales suffered 20 defeats in 34 games.
The first Wales Test win over the South Africans in July was one of the highlights.
He is going to France on Sunday to check out the World Cup venues.
Ken Owens said the internationals had been difficult for a number of reasons.
"We've worked hard, we've stayed close together, we've got things wrong," Owens said.
Discipline and consistency have not been good enough during the four games.
It's how it is. We need to keep an eye on what's happening, and hope Welsh rugby gets better.
