Adobe says consumers spent a record $9.12 billion online on Black Friday.

Overall online sales for the day after Thanksgiving were up 2.5% year over year, and electronics were a major contributor, as online sales surged 221% over an average day in October. Exercise equipment and toys both increased in popularity.

Many consumers embraced flexible payment plans on Black Friday in order to deal with high prices and inflation. Buy Now Pay Later payments increased by 80% and revenue increased by 81%.

The hottest items of the year include gaming consoles, drones, Apple MacBooks, Dyson products, and Disney Encanto.

More than half of online sales were made on a mobile device, an increase from last year.

The record-breaking spending comes on the heels of a strong day of Thanksgiving shopping, in which consumers spent a record $5.29 billion online. In a day, shoppers spend $2 billion to $3 billion online.

The numbers may be a sign of things to come. Target, Macy's, and other retailers reported a lull in sales in October and November.

e- commerce activity will be strong through the weekend despite Black Friday being over, according to Adobe. Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year with Adobe expecting consumers to spend over $5 billion.

Cyber Monday is expected to drive $11.2 billion in spending, an increase of 5.1% over last year.
