Brendan Loughnane with his PFL title
Loughnane became champion in his second season with PFL

The Professional Fighters League World Championship in New York was won by Brendan Loughnane.

In the fourth round, Loughnane earned a fourth-round TKO.

The first British PFL champion is a man from Manchester.

Only four Britons have won a title in a major MMA promotion.

He is following in the footsteps of UFC champion LeonEdwards, former UFC title holder Michael Bisping and ex-Bellator light-weight champion Liam McGeary.

The year for British MMA was capped by the title win of Edwards.

Loughnane was once on the fringes of the UFC but didn't get a contract.

He has a good resume with 26 wins and four losses.

'I'm one of the best in the world'

Six world title fights, each with a winner-take-all $1m prize, were held at Madison Square Garden.

A number of UFC stars were cageside to watch the event.

The first round was a sign of things to come as Loughnane attacked Jenkins' lead leg with calf kicks and denied a number of takedown attempts.

Loughane was able to land a number of combinations as the fight wore on due to the swelling of his shin.

The referee stopped the fight after a series of punches on the ground.

He fell to his knees in tears after the win.

He said to forget the belt and focus on the performance.

I proved tonight that I'm one of the best at my position.

His first amateur fight was worth £150.

His mother was in the cage with him after the fight.

There is a woman here. When we didn't have a pound in the back, she inspired me to look at what we have.

I'm crying because of that. I'm teary eyed. Thanks to all the people who spent their money to come here. The times are difficult. The covid is over. Thank you everyone.

Scotland's Ray comes up short

Stevie Ray hugs Olivier Aubin-Mercier in the cage
Ray has won 25 of his professional fights, losing 11

Stevie Ray was attempting to become the first Scottish champion in a major MMA promotion when he lost to a Canadian.

The referee stepped in and ended the fight after Ray was floored by a right hook at the end of the second round.

Ray asked what knocked him out after the strike.

Two years after retiring from the sport, Ray was able to get two victories over Anthony Pettis to reach the final, where he was defeated.

After retiring from the UFC due to injuries and a lack of fight opportunities, Ray rebuilt his career when the PFL gave him an opportunity this year.

Harrison suffers shock defeat

The women's lightweight title was secured by Brazil's Larissa Pacheco, who earned a unanimous decision win over two-time PFL champion Harrison.

Pacheco was a huge favorite going into the bout with Harrison, who she had lost to twice before, but overcame a back-and-forth contest to win.

Harrison's quest to become the first three-time champion in PFL history ended when she lost her first fight.

In the first round, Britain's Dakota Ditcheva knocked out her opponent.

The referee waved off the fight after Ditcheva dropped America's Corogenes with a right hand.
