If all goes according to plan, the four-stage, 146-foot-tall (44 meters) PSLV will deploy the primary satellite just over 17 minutes after liftoff.

There are three satellites in India's Oceansat series. Sea surface temperatures and other ocean characteristics will be monitored by the satellite for five years. Data will be sent back to Earth from a fourth instrument.

The eight small satellites will be deployed after the upper stage performs a number of maneuvers. The first of these passengers will leave about 114 minutes into the flight.

There are a lot of piggyback craft. The "Astrocast" cubesats are about the size of a loaf of bread and will demonstrate the internet of things.

The capabilities and commercial applications of a small Earth-observation camera will be demonstrated by another one called Anand.

The flight will be the 56th. India's medium-lifter is capable of delivering up to 3,650 pounds of cargo to sun-synchronous polar.

India has a heavy lifter called the GSLV which can carry up to 18,000 pounds. The nation just debuted its Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), but things didn't go according to plan; the rocket failed to deliver its payloads to the proper orbit during its first mission.
