According to multiple sources, the Federal Trade Commission is going to file an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft in an attempt to stop the tech giant's takeover of video game manufacturer.
If a lawsuit is filed, it will be an indictment against big tech companies and their future acquisitions from the FTC chairwoman, who has been an outspoken critic of big tech firms.
Sources told Politico that a decision on a case could come as early as next month.
The FTC wouldn't comment on the matter.
In January, Microsoft announced its purchase of the video game company. The company has a large stake in the video game industry. Sony has been critical of this deal.
In an October statement to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, Sony argued that the deal would hurt its ability to compete with Microsoft and give consumers less choice. Microsoft countered these concerns in an additional statement to the UK governing agency, saying that it has promised to keep 'Call of Duty' on its platforms and that Sony's objection to the deal only stems from its desire to maintain its top spot in gaming.
Several shareholders in New York-based pension funds filed a lawsuit against the company in April of this year, claiming that the rushed nature of the deal was due in part to avoid further attention on the sexual harassment scandals surrounding the company.
It is absurd to suggest that the transaction could lead to anticompetitive effects. We will continue to work with regulators around the globe to allow the transaction to proceed, but won't hesitate to defend the transaction if necessary.
