According to Chris Low, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have zeroed in on Matt Rhule as their next head coach.

Rhule and Nebraska are close to a deal.

The Athletic'sMitch Sherman reported Thursday that Rhule is still a serious candidate to replace Scott Frost, who was fired in September.

There have been conflicting reports regarding Rhule's candidacy. According to Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports, the former Carolina bench boss turned down the Nebraska job.

The Athletic reported in September that Kansas head coach Lance Leipold, Alabama offensive assistant Bill O'Brien and Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell were also candidates for the Nebraska job.

Leipold is out of the running after he agreed to a new contract with the Jayhawks.

Rhule was fired by the team after a poor start to the season. Carolina failed to make the playoffs in his three years as head coach.
