As Kevin Durant works his way up the all-time scoring list, he does so with a greater appreciation for what he is doing as he nears the NBA's scoring record.
It's going to be a range of emotions for him to be the No. 1 scorer in the history of the game. It's cool to be in an era where we see this live. It's cool to see how he and his family and his friends are going to react.
In Wednesday's win over the Toronto Raptors, Kevin Garnett fell to 18th on the all-time list. James has more career points than any other player.
As he climbs to a higher place in basketball history, he has never focused on being the all-time scoring king.
"I didn't think of it at all." Early on in my career, I heard the talk about how difficult it is to consistently score in the league, but I know how hard it is. It's out of your control. I just try to be the best version of myself that I can be.
Each player on the list gets the same treatment. He preferred to focus on improving his own game rather than trying to get past a name.
"I didn't think of it that way." It's always about keeping adding and building up good days. I want to be consistent in who I am as a player. I'm thankful to get up and do things like this. Continue to add to my skills and build my database for the game.
I look forward to that. It is what it is for whoever I pass and whoever I break for myself. I want to be the best I can be every day.
When asked about the fact that he and James haven't played against each other since Christmas Day last year, Durant smiled and said, "That's right."
"I didn't think about it until y'all started talking about it," he stated. It's always going to be exciting when he steps on the floor, he's a top two player and a top three player. People look forward to battles between us because they have seen so many of them. At an old age, people want to watch us play.
