A manual verification process that could strain the company's shrunken workforce is one of the reasons why Musk announced a new color-coded system.

Musk said that the new verification system would launch on December 2.

When the firm opened up its verification badges to paying users, there was a flood of fake accounts.

The blue check mark will be replaced by a blue, gold and gray tick system.

The gold and gray ticks will be given to the accounts.

Blue checks will now be given to verified individuals, celebrity or not, according to Musk.

A small logo could be added to an individual's account to show they belong to an organization.

What We Don’t Know

It's unclear if users will have to pay in order to get verified. Musk tried to change the verification system earlier this month, but it didn't work. The service gave a blue checkmark to anyone who paid a fee and did not confirm the identity of account holders, unleashing a torrent of verified accounts. Drugmaker Eli Lilly, former President Donald Trump, Pope Francis, NBA star LeBron James, games giant Nintendo, and Musk's own company were all parodied.

Crucial Quote

Manual verification is a necessary step to tackle impersonation. Given the mass firing and exodus of staffers since Musk took the helm, this process is likely to add considerable strain to the workforce.

What To Watch For

Musk acknowledged that the scheme may not go to plan and promised to act accordingly. He said that users could use organizational affiliation, biography and follower counts to differentiate between accounts with the same name if they were to be impersonated. If it becomes a problem, Musk said there could be a way to show follower counts under peoples' names.
