The Swiss company behind a suite of privacy focused products including email has teased an upgrade for its flagship service.
The most interesting aspect of the latest reveal is the fact that email is still the bread and butter of the company.
From a privacy perspective, the company has revealed a lot of new features for the coming months that are just a little similar to Gmail. That is not a problem.
Gmail is one of the most widely-used email services on Earth, and for the most part it has worked, because of the sticky nature of the product.
The email categorization system that automatically groups inbound emails by type under separate tabs is a great utility for consumers. One of the many promises that Google makes to keep users coming back is "we'll make your life easier."
In the future, Proton Mail will offer the same categorization function. This may raise some questions over how Proton will achieve this without compromising users' data privacy, in that categorization is surely dependent on scanning content, but the company said that it's working to implement this in a "fully private way." This could prove to be a popular feature, one that may help smooth the way for those looking to leave Gmail.
Gmail has offered message-scheduling for a few years now, allowing users to set their email to be sent when they are asleep. This is something that is being worked on by Proton and will bring it closer to the features of Gmail.

Email reminders, where users can set an alert to remind themselves to respond at a later time, is one of the new features. It is similar to a feature that Gmail has offered.
The company said that it will be adding new features to block email tracking so that companies or bad actors can't know when an email was opened.

It's not possible to search through emails in Proton Mail. For premium paid users, message content search is only available on the web, but not on mobile. With the expansion of full message search to is mobile apps, users will be able to use a locally-stored index to find message content.
Changes aren't restricted to Proton Mail. The company is getting ready to release a native Calendar app for the iPhone in the next few weeks, nearly a year after it was released on the phone. There will be a new 3-day and 7-day view as well as a "full-agenda" view that shows a day's planned activities in a chronological list.
Users will be able to create to-do lists and transform tasks into reminders within the calendar app.

The company plans to roll out deeper integrations across its product suite as it continues to expand its product lineup. The recipient can access the file through a secure link if the email attachment exceeds the 25 MB limit.
SimpleLogin is a platform that allows users to shield their real email address when signing up for online services. The company plans to build tighter integrations with SimpleLogin.
Users of Proton's various apps will only have to sign in once to access each service, but this is only available through a web browser.
The new email-scheduling and email- tracking blocker will be arriving within the next month, as will the new iPhone Calendar app.
The rest of the world will be landing at various intervals.
