The checkmark saga may be coming to an end.
The company hopes to re-launch its account verification scheme on December 2nd. The feature will go live with the re- launch of the paid membership tier.

The system is evolving. There will be three checks, one for companies, one for government and one for individuals.
Paying $8 for a membership won't suffice to get a checkmark. All verified accounts will be verified.

This is a full circle for Musk and the social network. The blue checkmark was used to prove identities. It was rendered useless by Musk after he took over at the social networking site. Everyone got a checkmark for eight bucks, and that's what they did, with fake news and confusing users making it hard to determine which accounts were real.
You can get a more detailed recap here. Musk and Twitter stumbled aimlessly, killing off features and bringing them back on a daily basis before deciding on manually authenticating accounts before granting them checkmarks, which is more or less what they did before Musk arrived.
Users, companies, and governments will have to pay eight bucks for the privilege of being able to verify their accounts on the micro-messaging service.
Musk said a longer explanation is coming next week about the new system.
