The Last of Us is getting a big budget TV show, the Metal Gear Solid movie is still in the works, and the long-dormant stealth series is getting an eight-part radio adaptation. Tom Clancy's novel of the same name was released earlier this year and will be adapted for the screen by the British Broadcasting Corporation.
In the context of the many recent big-budget game adaptation for the big and small screen alike, a radio play sounds like an odd choice. I'm cautiously optimistic that a radio format might actually play to the franchise's strengths because the games were generally at their best in their slowest and most deliberate stealth moments rather than the high stakes action set-pieces of other titles.
Next Friday, the sounds will be available worldwide.
Michael Ironside won't be giving a voice to Sam Fisher. The spy will be played by Andonis Anthony, who is best known for his work on the British radio soap TheArchers. He is joined by several other people. Sebastian Baczkiewicz and Paul Cornell, who look to be prolific writers of Doctor Who TV episodes, novelizations, and radio dramas, adapted the show for radio.
Fans of the game should enjoy this. The game has a lot of action, tension and excitement, but it also has more elements. There is a lot of comedy, a lot of drama, and a lot of broadening by the characters.
It should feel like you're listening to a surround sound experience through a pair of headphones.
There is still life in the old stealth franchise despite the fact that the last official game was released a decade ago. A remake of the first game in the series is in the works, as well as an animated adaptation from the creator of the John Wick franchise.
From Friday December 2nd, all eight episodes of Tom Clancy's novel will be available on the radio and on the app. The show will be broadcasted on the radio in the UK every week on December 2nd.
